CHLA Community Service

CHLA and BOMA – Los Angeles, donated 10 bikes at the 2024 CalSAE Elevate Conference held in Burbank in April 2024. Conference attendees put the bikes together as part of a session called Rules of the Road for your Board & Staff. The bikes were later donated to the Burbank Community Service YMCA Child Development Center for their pre-school program.

In the spirit of the 2023 holiday season, the California Hotel & Lodging Association is committed to helping those in need in our community. CHLA staff volunteered at the Sacramento Food Bank, which helps to address food insecurity for over 300,000 people each month. We embraced the spirit of giving through the Sacramento Children’s Home, providing essential gifts to brighten a family’s holiday celebration. Grateful for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact where it matters most.

In December 2023, members of the CHLA team helped to stuff purses for Julie’s Purse Project. Julie’s Purse Project is a public charity that collects new and gently used purses and fills them with essential items and a note of encouragement. These purses are donated to local organizations that assist homeless women, victims of domestic violence, and sex trafficking survivors.

On June 13th, 2022, the CHLA Team participated in the Sacramento Hotel Foundation’s First Annual Bowl-O-Rama Fundraiser for Scholarships. A portion of the proceeds went to the association’s scholarship fund for college/university students in hospitality programs. An afternoon of bowling at the Punch Bowl Social in downtown Sacramento followed by a buffet dinner and awards reception for the raffle prize winners. “The Bowler Bunch” had a fun work outing while supporting another local hotel association!

California Hotel & Lodging Association staff members Jennifer Flohr, Deb Kurtti, and Jessica Counts got a head start on their spring cleaning along with the Meeting Professionals International Sacramento Sierra Nevada Chapter. Donations were provided for the Assistance League of Sacramento. Their resale shop, Fulton Finds is one of their biggest fundraisers to support their current community programs for children and adults. Their shop offers the community with affordable quality clothing, housewares, furniture, books and various items. 

September 7, 2019 California Hotel & Lodging Association staff volunteered with many volunteers in the hospitality industry to offer service in the local community. CHLA staff assisted the Asian Resources Inc. in power washing their buildings, deep cleaning the facilities and classrooms. School supplies and backpacks were also donated to distribute to students in need by the ReIMAGINE Mack Road Foundation. 

September 8, 2018 California Hotel & Lodging Association staff joined a large group of Volunteers for the 12th Annual Community Service Day with the Sacramento Hotel Association. Hotels and organizations offered a day of improvements. This year CHLA contributes by painting and cleaning at the Women’s Civic Improvement Club of Sacramento and donated nonperishable food donations for the City Food Bank and Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.

Over 300 hospitality employees registered to volunteer for the Sacramento Hotel Association 11th Annual Service Day on Saturday September 9, 2017. Volunteers from 20 hotels and hospitality vendors served in 22 projects at 19 sites in Southwest Sacramento. CHLA staff and family sorted personal care items for My Sister’s House. My Sister’s House assists undeserved women and children impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking by providing a culturally appropriate and responsive safe haven, job training, and community services.

CHLA staff members Jennifer Flohr, Sr. Vice President, Jenn IIiff, Program & Events Manager, and Jessica Counts, Events Coordinator participated in volunteer activities at the Meeting Professionals International (MPI) World Education Congress June 20-22, 2017. CHLA staff helped encourage a positive social impact by giving back to the Las Vegas Community by packing lunches and sorting bulk produce for the Three Square Food Bank.

CHLA Staff members and family participated in the Sacramento Hotel Association’s 10th Annual Community Service day. Volunteers celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the event and completed 20 projects at 19 sites in Oak Park on September 10, 2016. For this year’s donation component CHLA staff and volunteers provided personal care items and household supplies for the Lutheran Social Services (LSS).

CHLA Staff members – Sue, Michelle, Jessica, and Danny were pleased to volunteer for the Sacramento Hotel Association 9th Annual Community Service Day. On Saturday September 12, over 300 volunteers helped with 21 community projects including 5 parks and 1 community center. Every year the group of volunteers continues to grow! CHLA and other volunteers in the hospitality industry donated new school supplies and backpacks for “Operation Backpack” program.  This backpack drive benefits homeless and at-risk children in our community.

CHLA staff members Jennifer Flohr, Sandra Oberle and Jessica Counts joined the Sacramento Hotel Association on December 15th for their 2014 Holiday Reception and Toy Drive. Sacramento hoteliers and industry professionals donated dozens of toys to benefit the Stanford Settlement Neighborhood Center in Sacramento. The organization coordinated this project as Operation Cratchit (remember Scrooge?), which serves more than 700 households in North Sacramento. This totals to about 3,000 people including 1,200 children. CHLA staff members were pleased to partake in this Toy Drive and share their holiday spirit.

CHLA staff members – Jessica, Michelle, Karen, and their families – participated in the Sacramento Hotel Association’s 8th Annual Community Service Day. On Saturday, September 6, the Sacramento Hotel Association and more than 250 volunteers from the Sacramento Hotel Association’s member hotels and vendors offered a day of improvements, donations and community pride at the Coloma Community Center, several City parks, a community garden and the Colonial Heights Public Library. Volunteer teams also worked at the Old City Cemetery, Bret Harte Elementary, Kiwanis Family House, River City Food Bank, Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services, Shriners Hospitals for Children-Northern California, Tahoe Elementary and the YMCA. Volunteers also created greeting cards that will be given to patients at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento.

CHLA Senior Vice President Jennifer Flohr and CABBI Program Coordinator Jenn Wheaton participated in a community service project in August 2014 as part of the Meeting Professionals International (MPI) 2014 World Education Congress in Minneapolis. Conference attendees participated in a number of projects benefiting the local community. At the end of the day, attendees had built 16 bikes, packed 96 backpacks, sorted 927 cans of food, built and painted 15 pieces of furniture assembled 500 hygiene kits, tied 85 blankets and ultimately impacted 8 Minneapolis based organizations.

CHLA Volunteer Leadership and staff joined together with the Galilee Center to help feed 50 local families.  On November 18th at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa, CHLA packed 50 bags of food to fed 50 families, three meals each. The Galilee Center mission’s statement is to fulfill the needs of the underprivileged and disadvantaged by provide food, clothing and other basic needs to affirm their dignity with love, compassion and respect. CHLA also donated over $1,000 in cash in support of this organization.
