AB 685: COVID-19 Notification Requirement & How to Avoid a $25,000 Mistake
On January 1, 2021, legislation that requires employers to provide notice of COVID-19 cases in the workplace took effect. The measure, Assembly Bill 685 (Reyes, 2020), expands Cal/OSHA’s authority to issue Orders Prohibiting Use (OPU), otherwise known as ‘Stop Work Orders’, for workplaces that pose a risk of an “imminent hazard” relating to COVID-19, i.e., hazards threatening immediate and serious physical harm. It also requires businesses to notify workers who were on the premises with the person who has COVID-19 within one business day of notice of infection. That notice shall tell workers what type of sick leave they may be eligible for and the disinfection plan for the worksite. If three workers test positive within 14 days, the employer must report to local public health department.

Legislative Action Summit
CHLA is Pleased to Announce our VIRTUAL 2021 Legislative Action Summit
In 2020, CHLA was forced to cancel our Legislative Action Summit to respect state lockdown orders and pandemic response. After a fast-paced year of advocacy, we are pleased to host the 2021 Legislative Action Summit through a virtual forum. This forum will include updates about CHLA priorities, information about the general sentiment of government officials and agencies, and provide opportunities for you to connect with your elected officials to advocate for the issues that matter most. Last year ushered in unprecedented economic devastation across the state and legislators are struggling to cut through the noise and find how to support the most affected, help us guide legislators to the tools our industry needs to recover.
The stakes have never been higher and the urgency never greater, don’t miss out on a chance to help shape the future of hospitality.
The California Lodging Industry Legislative Action Summit is a unique legislative outreach and communication event produced by the California Hotel & Lodging Association. Each year, CHLA members from around the state gather in Sacramento (virtually this year) for presentations on legislative and regulatory issues and visit with their local Assembly Members and Senators to discuss key policy measures.
In its 20th year, this event provides those individuals and companies which work with and support California’s lodging industry, a way to help increase the influence of the lodging industry on policy makers.
Summit activities include a Legislative Issues Briefing on the most significant topics affecting California’s lodging industry, national updates from AHLA and AAHOA, and virtual lobbying sessions with legislators and their staff.
