Central Coast Highway 1 To Reopen In March 2026

CalTrans announced Tuesday that Highway 1 near Big Sur is expected to fully reopen by March 2026 after more than three years of closures caused by landslides. The news is a relief for Central Coast hotels and tourism businesses that have struggled since the first slide in January 2023. Over the past year, CHLA has worked with Visit SLO CAL and other local hoteliers to communicate with state officials, advocate for resources, and reinforce that the Central Coast remains open for visitors despite closures. “This is much-needed news for our hotels and those who have kept the light on for the more than 5 million annual visitors that cherish one of the world’s great natural attractions,” said Lynn S. Mohrfeld, CHLA President + CEO. Once reopened, travelers will again be able to enjoy the uninterrupted scenic drive along one of America’s most iconic routes.
