Election Day Compliance Reminder: Paid Time Off For Voting

As Election Day (November 5) approaches, California employers must post a notice by October 26 informing employees of their right to paid time off for voting. This notice, required under California Elections Code Section 14001, should be displayed in a visible location at the workplace. Employees are entitled to up to two hours of paid time off to vote if they lack sufficient time outside working hours, and they are entitled to take additional unpaid time off if necessary. Employers may require that employees provide advance notice if they need time off to vote and may require that this time be taken at the beginning or end of shifts. Click the link below to download the required notice from the California Secretary of State’s website. To ensure compliance, post the notice by October 26, inform managers about the voting time-off policy, and encourage employees to exercise their right to vote.
